三．否定轉移
英語“否定轉移”現象不僅是一種常見的語言現象，也是英語語言的一種慣用法，同時也體現了英漢兩種語言在表達否定方面存在一定的差異。因此也是翻譯中的一大難點，以下是幾種常見的否定轉移句式：
not …because/by 形式上否定的是主句部分，意義上否定的卻是because之后的內容，譯為“并不是/并非因為…”。
He didn’t wear an overcoat because the weather was cold.
并不是因為天氣冷他才穿大衣。
We didn’t deny the person merely because he was not qualified.
我們并非因為這個人不夠條件才拒絕他的。
He wasn’t arrested by lack of necessary information.
他并不是因為缺乏必要的信息而被捕的。
試比較：
①He did not go to school because he was sick.他沒去學校，因為他生病了。
②He doesn’t do exercise because he likes to.他不是因為喜歡才去鍛煉的。
一般來說，判斷否定是否轉移要根據上下文來定，第①句如果譯為“他不是因為生病才去學校的”就不符合常理了。
否定主句轉譯為否定從句
（1）當主句的謂語為表示看法的動詞時，賓語從句的否定詞往往移到主句，這類動詞有：believe, think, suppose, expect, imagine, reckon等。
I don’t believe that he can do it.
我相信他不會做此事。
We don't expect candidates to be paragons of virtue.
我們不指望候選人在道德上盡善盡美。
We don’t think that he is suitable for the job.
我們覺得他不適合做這工作。
但是，若謂語動詞為hope，賓語從句中的否定則不會發生轉移。
如：I hope you weren’t ill. 我想你沒有生病吧。
（2）當主句的謂語為表示感覺的動詞時，賓語從句中的否定詞往往轉移到主句。這類動詞有：appear, seem, feel as if, look as if, sound as if 等。
It doesn’t seem that he’s telling the truth.
看來他沒有講真話。
(=It seems that he isn`t telling the truth.)
The project doesn't sound feasible.
聽起來不切實(=It sounds infeasible)
It doesn't seem to be a very good plan, but I think we should have an open mind about it for the time being.
這個計劃看上去不太好, 但我認為我們應該暫時多聽聽對它的意見.
(=It seems to be not a good plan, but ….)
It doesn't look as if it's going to rain tomorrow.
明天不見得會下雨.
（=It looks as if it isn’t going to rain tomorrow.）
以nothing none等否定代詞或no + 名詞做主語的句子，一般將否定轉移到謂語
No energy can be created, and none destroyed.
能量不能創造，也不能消滅。
Nothing in the world can come between us.
世界上沒有任何事情可以將我們分開。
其他形式的否定轉移
Rome is not build in one day.
冰凍三尺非一日之寒。(形式上否定的是謂語部分，實際上否定的是狀語部分)
部分否定本質上也是一種否定轉移，形式上否定的是謂語，實際上否定了其他部分。
All students in my class are not clever.
并不是我們班上的所有學生都很聰明。(否定主語)
I don’t know all of them.
我對他們并不都認識。(否定賓語)
四，形肯意否的表達
英語中還有一種否定，即不使用not、hardly、impossible等否定詞，而借助于一些單獨使用時沒有否定意思的詞構成的詞組成固定搭配來表達否定的含義。翻譯時也要譯為否定，
too結構
too…to do：太…不能…
The news is too good to be true.
這消息太好了，不可能是真的。
too +a/ad +for+邏輯主語+to do：
This problem is too difficult for us to solve.
這道題太難了我們解不出來。
than的結構
more than 這個結構我們之前在形容詞的比較級部分已經做了講解，more than的意思有很多，當more than 拆開用時，常譯為譯為“與其說…倒不如說” “是…而不是”
The change in government is more for show than for real.
政府的轉變更多的是裝裝樣子，而不是真的。
He is more knave than fool.
與其說他蠢，不如說他壞。
more than one can也是常見的譯為否定的句式。
The problems of urban areas are far more than can be handled any short - term efforts.
城市地區的問題是不可能短期內解決的。
rather than結構
rather than（是…而不是）
The effect is soft and pretty rather than drop-dead sexy.
給人的印象是柔和俏麗而不是吸人眼球的性感。
would rather…than…(寧愿…也不)
He would rather shoot himself than compromise his principles.
他寧愿一槍打死自己也不愿違背自己的原則。
other than(絕非，絕不；除了)
與…不同，不同于
She is quite other than what people described.
她這個人完全不象你所說的那樣。
除了
The book is intended for the readers other than professional.
這本書是供非專業人員閱讀的。
nothing less/else than/nothing short of 等表示“完全是，簡直是”
It was nothing less than a miracle.
那完全是個奇跡。
no less than表示“簡直是”
It is no less than blackmail to ask such a high price.
要價這么高簡直是搶劫。
